Residency Program Application Process

Thank you for you interest in the Division of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery residency training program. Our training program is five years in duration (including one year of general surgery with three months dedicated to OHNS followed by four years of comprehensive and progressive OHNS residency training) and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education training in the specialty.  Our program offers a wide exposure in benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck, neurotologic surgery, facial plastic surgery and maxillofacial trauma, sinus surgery, and the broad scope of general otolaryngology surgical procedures. In addition, participation in basic and clinical research is required. The hospitals involved in the training program include: Duke University Medical Center, the Durham VA, and currently the Asheville VA.

We participate in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) and are accepting applications through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for the 2009 match. We do not require any additional data other than what is required by ERAS. Letters of recommendation are limited to three, with at least two in an otolaryngology discipline. Information regarding ERAS procedures is available from the Dean’s office of each medical school through ERAS.

The application deadline for Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery is October 31, 2008. The interview process is one day, each taking place on a Friday in November and December.  If you have been granted an interview, you will be notified on or after November 15, 2008 via the e-mail address provided through ERAS.  A total of two medical school graduates are selected for entry into the regular five-year residency training program.

Thank you for your interest in our program.  If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact  Bridgit Burch, Residency Program Coordinator, at 919-681-6588.
